JSU Soccer Falls To Eastern Kentucky, 5-0

JACKSONVILLE – Eastern Kentucky kept its bid intact for the Ohio Valley Conference regular season crown as it shut out Jacksonville State, 5-0 in women's college soccer action on the JSU campus Friday evening.

The loss drops the Gamecocks to 3-12-1 overall and 1-5 in the OVC. Jax State returns to action on Sunday as it closes out the home schedule with a 1 p.m. duel with Morehead State. EKU bumped its season's mark to 7-6-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.

The Colonels put their first goal on the board in the 16th minute as Hillary Cooper dribbled past JSU goalkeeper Ali Koenig after Alex Raich fed her the ball. JSU managed to keep the score 1-0 through the halftime break and 21 minutes deep into the final period before EKU's Nicole Donnelly turned in an un-assisted goal. The Maroon and White would add three more goals within the next 15 minutes to secure the win. Janelle Coates and Sarah LeBrun posted goals after Lauren Fant dished out assists on both occasions. Tess Akgunduz squeezed in a goal between Coates' and LeBrun's goals.

EKU took advantage of 11 shot attempts in the second half and finished the contest with a 17-9 edge over the Gamecocks in attempts. Senior defender Alyshia Madison led JSU with a pair of shots, including one on goal. Koenig made four stops in the affair, while EKU keeper Stephanie Lynch tallied three saves.

The setback was Jax State's fifth in a row since winning the OVC opener over Southeast Missouri on Sept. 24. Opponents have shut down the Gamecock offense as they have not scored in the losing skid.

Sunday marks the final home appearance for three Gamecock seniors. JSU will honor Madison, from Cheney, Wash., forward Alex Rustad, from Keller, Texas and defender Debbie Matich, from Rolling Meadows, Ill. following the match with the Eagles of MSU on Sunday.
