JSU Sweeps OVC Cross Country Awards

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State swept the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Runners of the Week awards as Matt Brick and Ericka Stam were named this week's award winners on Tuesday by the OVC office.

Both Brick and Stam helped guide the Gamecocks to impressive finishes last Saturday at the 5th Annual JSU Foothills Invitational in Oxford, Ala. The JSU women claimed the title, while the men's squad posted a third-place finish.

This week's honor marks the second of the season as the sophomore garnered the award during the first week of the season. The Keller, Texas-native claimed the JSU Foothills Invitational individual crown after covering the 5K course in 18 minutes, 20.44 seconds, which was 39 seconds faster than the second place finisher. Stam has been Jax State's top finisher in every meet this season and has finished in the top-25 of every event this season.

"Matt and Ericka both did a great job this past weekend, as they have done all year," said JSU head coach Steve Ray.  "I really thought that we might be flat from all the traveling and racing we've done the two weeks prior, but they both had a really strong showing at our Foothills Invite.  And, they played a big part in helping us beat a couple of teams that I thought we would struggle with.  I expect them both to continue rolling out these type of performances," added Ray.

Brick claims his first OVC accolade of the season after finishing fourth out of a field of 89 runners on Saturday. The sophomore turned in a time of 26:43.29, his second-best time of the year in the 8K. In similar fashion to Stam on the women's side, Brick has been the JSU's top finisher in every meet thus far on the season.

After three straight weeks of competition, JSU will be idle this weekend before taking part in the Kennesaw State Owls Invitational on Friday, Oct. 22. The KSU meet will be a tune up for the OVC Cross Country Championships the following weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
