Gamecock Volleyball Falls in Five to SEMO

FINAL STATS

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team had its six-match winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, when the Gamecocks dropped a 3-2 (18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 19-25, 15-8) decision at Southeast Missouri.

The Gamecocks (11-8, 6-2 Ohio Valley Conference) hit just .129 on the afternoon and lost a five-set match for the first time since Oct. 4, 2008, snapping a string of 15-straight wins when the match reaches a deciding set. It was their first loss at the Redhawks (5-11, 2-5 OVC) since 2007.

“We've honestly been floating along the past few weeks relying on our ability,” JSU head coach Rick Nold said. “And today we were shown that, in our conference, that won't work. Give credit to SEMO, though. They played great defense and deserved the victory.”

In the loss, sophomore Alyx Schulte notched her second double-double in as many matches over the weekend. The Cold Spring, Ky., native put down 14 kills on offense, while picking up 15 digs on the back row. Senior Caitlin Vorbeck also recorded a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs on the afternoon.

Junior Lauren Harkins led a group of four JSU players with double digits in the digs column with 26. Senior Brooke Schumacher added 10 to go along with her 47 assists, the second double-double of the year for the Lake In the Hills, Ill., native.

Claire Keaton's double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs led the Redhawks, who hit just .133 as a team. They did block 13 shots, paced by a match-high eight from Emily Coon.

The Gamecocks will wrap up a five-match road swing on Friday, when they play Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn., at 7 p.m. On Oct. 22, JSU will return home to face Eastern Kentucky at Pete Mathews Coliseum, where the Gamecocks will play seven of their final nine matches of the season.
