Jax State Tennis Finishes Weekend On High Note At UTC Steve Baras Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State men's and women's tennis team opened the fall season with an impressive showing at the Chattanooga-hosted Steve Baras Fall Classic this weekend.

On the men's side, the Gamecock duo of Joshua Bourke and Eric Matthieson claimed the men's doubles Flight 4 after knocking off the top-seeded tandem of Ryan Spencer and Justin Susserman of Kennesaw State 8-5 on Sunday. Matthieson and Bourke were also in action in singles play as both were in consolation finals. Bourke, a newcomer from Kent, United Kingdom, downed Tennessee Tech's James Crawford, 6-4, 6-1 in the Flight 3 singles consolation draw. Matthieson, a sophomore from Alpharetta, Ga., outlasted Fabio Medina from Lee University in a three-set duel. After splitting the first two sets, Matthieson claimed the pro set tie-breaker 10-3.

The JSU women were in the finals of three draws and finished the weekend with a pair of wins. Senior Martina Dessbesell topped Ohio Valley Conference foe Jessica Albuquerque of Eastern Kentucky in straight sets in the finals of the Flight 1 singles consolation, 6-2, 6-2. In the women's doubles Flight 2 consolation final, JSU's pairing of Raisa Guasti and Raphaela Lima turned back EKU's team of Myriem Mhirit and Saioa Oscoz, 8-6. Guasti, who joined the Gamecocks this season, was also in the finals of the main draw of Flight 2 singles as the Victoria, Brazil-native fell to Wofford's Sarah Evans 6-4, 6-2.

Both teams continue fall action later in the month as they take part in the ITA Regional in Birmingham, Ala. On Oct. 22-25.
