JSU Rallies Lead To Volleyball Sweep of UT Martin

FINAL STATS

MARTIN, Tenn. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team had to rally in all three sets on Saturday but extended its win streak to five matches with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-19, 25-20) sweep of UT Martin in Ohio Valley Conference action.

The Gamecocks (10-7, 5-1 OVC) trailed late in all three sets against the Skyhawks (3-15, 1-5 OVC) but were able to put together runs to win each set. The sweep was the first for the Gamecocks since Sept. 12 and their third-straight OVC road win after a five-set victory at Murray State on Friday.

“I was a weekend of comebacks,” JSU head coach Rick Nold said. “Last night, we came back strong after losing games three and four. Today, we were down big in all three games but kept fighting back. I think that shows great resolve and determination, which is nice to see in these big conference matches.”

Sophomore Jen Meyer knocked down a match-high 14 kills to lead a Gamecock offense that hit .274 on the match, .467 in the second set. A native of Maineville, Ohio, Meyer took just 26 swings on the day and used a .538 attack percentage to pace the Gamecocks up front.

Senior Caitlin Vorbeck totaled 12 kills in the match, making her the only other player on the floor to record double digits in kills. The Raytown, Mo., native ran her career kills total to 1,182, tying Kelby Rumph for seventh place on the school's career kills list. Vorbeck also had four blocks and seven digs.

Senior Brooke Schumacher dished 36 of the Gamecocks' 42 assists in the match, setting up a Jax state offense that hit .274 as a unit. The Lake In The Hills, Ill., native also had nine digs in the match, while running her career assists total to 4,014. She is just the third player in school history to record 4,000 assists in a career.

On the back row, the Gamecocks got 15 digs from junior Lauren Harkins and 12 from sophomore Alyx Schulte. Senior Kara Slater added seven kills on a .312 attack percentage.

The Skyhawks got 19 digs from Kasey Elswick on defense, while Britany Wilburn led the offense with nine kills.

The Gamecocks will be back on the floor on Friday, when they travel to Charleston, Ill., for a 7 p.m. match at Eastern Illinois.
