JSU's Jamal Young Earns OVC Football Weekly Honor

Jacksonville State's Jamal Young has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive tri-Player of the Week, the league office announced on Sunday.

Young rushed for a a career-high 162 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead No. 4 Jacksonville State to a 28-23 road win over Eastern Illinois in the OVC opener for the Gamecocks. He averaged 9.0 yards per carry to help the Gamecocks post their ninth straight win and improve to 1-0 in the OVC.

The Jackson, Miss., native scored all three touchdowns during the second quarter after rushing seven times for 116 yards in the quarter.

With the Gamecocks down 9-0, Young scored on a 1-yard run with 10:38 left in the quarter. Young then raced 76 yards for his second touchdown of the quarter, and then scored on 5-yard run exactly one minute later as the Gamecocks took a 21-9 halftime lead.

The senior runningback also had one reception for six yards and became the first Gamecock to top 100 rushing yards this season. He became the first JSU player to rush for 100 yards since Ryan Perrilloux had 115 yards on 9 carries vs Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 21, 2009. He also became the first player to rush for 150 yards since Clay Green (22-163) at Chattanooga on Nov. 4, 2006.

Jacksonville State, which owns the nation's longest active winning streak with eight straight wins, will host Murray State on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Burgess-Snow Field at JSU Stadium and tickets can be purchased at the JSU Athletic Ticket Office (Kennamer Hall), the Jacksonville State on-campus Bookstore (Theron Montgomery Building) and the Jacksonville Bookstore (Mountain Street).
