JSU Falls To Eastern Illinois In OVC Soccer Action, 2-0

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team could not ride the momentum from Friday's Ohio Valley Conference win over Southeast Missouri as Eastern Illinois claimed a 2-0 decision on a wet Sunday at the JSU Soccer Field.

Off and on showers that moved through the area plagued the entire match. The Gamecocks fell to 3-8-1 overall and finished the opening OVC weekend with a split. The Panthers bumped their overall mark to 4-6-2 and 1-1 in league play.

What looked to be a scoreless first 45 minutes as the clock was winding down inside the last ten seconds, EIU struck for the game's first goal as Ashley Streid followed up a Panther shot that was deflected off of JSU goal keeper Ali Koenig. EIU turned in five shot attempts in the first half and controlled the tempo in the second half as it posted eight in the final half to finish with a 13-2 shot advantage over the Gamecocks. Junior Chelsea Pelletier and sophomore Ariel Jones tallied shots for Jax State.

In the second half, EIU took advantage of one of its five corner kicks as Jessie Morgan headed the ball over Koenig in the 84th minute to push the lead out to 2-0 with just six minutes left in the contest. Ashley Eck was credited with the assist. Koenig posted five saves in the setback.

JSU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 1 as it embarks on a three-match OVC road trip, beginning in Murray, Ky. against Murray State. Match time is set for 3 p.m. The Gamecocks close out their first OVC weekend on the road with a Sunday tilt with UT Martin.
