FINAL STATS

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team edged Tennessee State in five sets on Friday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum, extending its home winning streak to 14 matches.

In their first five-set match of the season the Gamecocks (7-7, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference) went blow-for-blow with the Lady Tigers (3-8, 1-2 OVC) before claiming their 13-straight win in five-set matches, 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11). Sophomore Jen Meyer notched a match-high 17 kills on a .400 attack percentage to lead four Gamecocks in double digits.

JSU hit just .176 as a team but used a stingy defense to limit the Lady Tigers to a .122 attack percentage. Junior Lauren Harkins led the way for the Gamecocks back row with a match-high 21 digs, while sophomore Alyx Schulte's 15 digs complimented her 12 kills to complete her second double-double in as many matches.

Senior Kara Slater needed just 20 swings to record her 13 kills. The Colorado Springs, Colo., native also blocked five TSU attempts to go alongside her .550 attack percentage. Fellow senior Caitlin Vorbeck added 11 kills for the Gamecocks up front, while pitching in eight digs and a pair of blocks on the defensive side of the net.

The Gamecocks used both of their setters throughout the match. Senior Brooke Schumacher dished 28 assists, while freshman Abbey Heredia handed out 22.

The Lady Tigers got 11 kills on a .476 attack percentage from Shaquita Williams, while Erika Moss and Calasia Williams each picked up 11 digs.

The Gamecocks, playing their first home match after a nine-match road swing, will wrap up a two-match homestand on Saturday with a 2 p.m. meeting with Austin Peay. Admission is free for all fans.
