Parsson Earns OVC Golfer of the Week Honors

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State junior Astrid Parsson has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Female Golfer of the Week for her efforts in the Gamecocks' record-breaking weekend.

Parsson, a native of Malmo, Sweden, shot a 2-under 142 to tie the school record for the lowest 36-hole score and finish fourth at the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate in Waynesville, N.C. In just her second tournament as a Gamecocks after transferring from Illinois State, Parsson tied former JSU player Manuela Tarazona's 36-hole record set in 2006.

She carded a bogey-free 70 in the opening round on the par-72 Waynesville Inn and Resort, tying her for the fourth-lowest round in school history. Parsson followed that with a final-round 72 to finish fourth in the 124-player field and guide JSU to the team title in the 24-team event. It was the Gamecocks' second win in as many tournaments this fall.

Parsson set the tone for JSU on the week, one that saw several records fall in the win. The Gamecocks' eight-stroke win was sparked by an opening round 289 that broke the school record for low round of 291, set in 2006. JSU matched its new record with a 289 in Sunday's final round to pull away from the field and finish with a school-record 578 (+2), 18 shots better than the previous 36-hole low.

The OVC weekly honor is the second in as many weeks for the Gamecocks after junior Lucia Vernandez Valdes received it last week. Fernandez Valdes also got in the JSU record books at the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate, when her first-round 69 made her just the fourth player in school history to card a round in the 60s. Sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez became the fifth on Sunday, when she fired a 69 to climb into a sixth-place tie with Fernandez Valdes.

The Gamecocks will be back in action on Oct. 18-19, when they compete in the Austin Peay Women's Invitational in Clarksville, Tenn. The JSU men's team will play in the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Classic in Choudrant, La., on Oct. 4-5.
