Gamecock Women Cap Record Setting Weekend With Win

FINAL RESULTS

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team capped a record-breaking weekend on Sunday at the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate, where the Gamecocks carded their lowest 36-hole total in history to win the event by eight shots.

A day after breaking the school record for the lowest team score in a single round, they tied that record with their second-straight 289 in as many day to win the 24-team event in convincing fashion. It was their second win in as many tournaments this fall and their two-day total of a two-over 578 is 18 shots better than the previous school record of 596, shot in the 2006 Troy Invitational.

Entering the final round on the 5,922-yard layout with a five-shot lead, the Gamecocks were able to hold off the field for the win. Radford carded a tourney-low 285 on Sunday, but a first-round 301 kept them out of striking distance of the Gamecocks and in sole possession of second place.

“It was a great day for our girls,” JSU assistant coach Brad Fleetwood said. “Even after the way we played in the first round, we knew we had to play our best to win the tournament today. We really came out with an aggressive mindset and did what we needed to do to finish. This is a great win for our girls over a very good field.”

JSU also had a record-setting weekend on the individual leaderboard, where junior Astrid Parsson tied the school record for a 36-hole total of 142 (70-72) to finish in a tie for fourth in the 124-player field. A junior transfer from Malmo, Sweden, Parsson finished the tournament at two-under to join former Gamecock Manueala Tarazona as the only JSU players to ever finish 36 holes under par.

Junior Lucia Fernandez Valdes and sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez finished the weekend at one-under in a tie for sixth. Fernandez Valdes, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, shot a 74 on Sunday after becoming the fourth player in school history to turn in a round in the 60s on Saturday with a 69. Armijo Fernandez, of San Juan, Argentina, became the fifth player in that group on Sunday, when her 69 pulled her into the fourth-place tie after a 74 in the opening round.

Sophomore Ornella Arrizon and freshman Lourdes Lopez each shot a 76 on Saturday and a 74 in the final round to tie for 40th with a two-day total of 150.

UAB's Jamie Ritter (69-71-140) won medalist honors by one shot over Hannah Coles of Radford and Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell. Elon and host Western Carolina tied for third on the team leaderboard, while Gardner-Webb and Middle Tennessee tied for fifth.

After the first two tournaments of the 2010-11 season, JSU has tied already tied for sixth in school history for the most wins in a season with two, three behind the 2003-04 team's record five. The Gamecocks will take a month off before their next tournament, the Austin Peay Women's Intercollegiate on Oct. 18-19 in Clarksville, Tenn.
