Record-Breaking Day Puts JSU Women Atop Great Smokies Field

FIRST ROUND RESULTS

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – On a record-setting afternoon for the Jacksonville State women's golf team, the Gamecocks stormed out to a five-shot lead after the first day of the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate at the 5,922-yard Waynesville In and Resort.

Junior Lucia Fernandez Valdes became just the fourth Gamecock to break 70 with a three-under 69 to tie for the lead and guide JSU to a 289 team score, the lowest single-round total by the Gamecocks in program history. Fernandez Valdes was three-under on the front and even on the back of the par-72 layout to pull into a four-way tie for the lead in the 124-player field.

Junior Astrid Parsson is one shot behind Fernandez Valdes in a five-way tie for fifth, tying her for the fifth-lowest one-round score by a Gamecock. Sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez' 74 put her in a tie for 21st, while Sophomore Ornella Arrizon and freshman Lourdes Lopez each carded a 76 to tie for 39th.

The Gamecocks enter Sunday's final round of the 36-hole event with a five-shot advantage in the 24-team field. Bowling Green (294) holds that second-place spot, while Appalachian State and Old Dominion each turned in a 299 to tie for third, 10 shots behind the Gamecocks. UAB, host Western Carolina, Elon and William and Mary are in a four-way tie for fifth, one shot out of third.
