Gamecock Men Finish Fourth at Springhill Suites

FINAL RESULTS

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Jacksonville State men's golf team placed two in the top five of the Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate on Tuesday, earning the Gamecocks a fourth-place finish in their first event of the fall.

Sophomore Andres Schonbaum turned in a two-over-par 74 in Tuesday's final round on the 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina to finish in fourth place, while junior Gonzalo Berlin's 75 landed him in fifth place in the 79-player field.

The Gamecocks, who were in third after Monday's first and second rounds, shot a 299 on Tuesday to finish one shot behind Furman in third place. JSU's 871 total score was just five shots behind second-place Chattanooga, while Georgia College won the event by 16 shots. Samford and Georgia Southern tied for fifth in the 15-team field, three shots behind JSU.

Schonbaum, a native of Cordoba, Argentina, carded a one-over 37 on each side of his final round to finish the 54-hole event at four-under, five shots behind medalist Chris Robb of Chattanooga. Berlin, of Brasilia, Brazil, was one shot back to finish at three-under for the event. Both Schonbaum and Berlin turned in a pair of 69s on Monday.

Junior Tom Robson (71-73-75-219) finished tied for 22nd for JSU, while freshman Matthew Wallace (79-73-79-231) tied for 63rd in his first collegiate tournament. Fellow freshman Dorian Fernandez bounced back after a shaky first day to shoot a 75 and climb five spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday.

The Gamecocks will return to the links on Oct. 4-5, when they compete in the Louisiana Tech Squire Creek Classic in Choudrant, La. The JSU women's team will be in action this weekend in Waynesville, N.C., at the Great Smokies Women's Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina.
