Gamecock Volleyball Drops Pair at Pioneer Classic

DENVER – The Jacksonville State volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-1 matches on Saturday at the Denver Pioneer Classic, where Notre Dame and host Denver knocked off the Gamecocks.

The day started off with the Gamecocks (4-5) falling to the Fighting Irish (6-2) in an afternoon match before the Pioneers (6-5) handed JSU its fourth-straight defeat in the nightcap.

In the first match of the day, the Gamecocks took the first set, only to watch Notre Dame rally for the 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-11, 25-19) win. Senior Caitlin Vorbeck led all players with 15 kills, the first half of her 29 on the day. The Raytown, Mo., native also picked up seven digs and assisted on three blocks on the defensive side for JSU.

Sophomore Jen Meyer was the only other JSU player with double figures in the kills column with 10. Junior Lauren Harkins led the Gamecocks' back row with 13 digs, and sophomore Alyx Schulte added 12. Senior Brooke Schumacher dished 35 of the Gamecocks' 38 assists.

The Irish got 12 kills from Kristen Dealy, while Andrea McHugh and Hilary Eppink each put down 11 kills. Frenchy Silva's 13 digs led the Irish defense.

In the final match of the day, the Pioneers took the opening set and held on for the 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) win. Vorbeck and junior Stephanie Koontz each recorded 14 kills, while Harkins and Schulte picked up 17 and 11 digs, respectively.

Denver got 11 kills from Alyssa Bonelli and 10 apiece from Colleen King and Brea Muhle, respectively.

The Gamecocks will wrap up their weekend at the Pioneer Classic on Sunday, when they face Gonzaga at 12 p.m. CT.
