Gamecocks To Host JSU/Adidas Soccer Classic

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State soccer team will jump-start an exciting weekend on the JSU campus as the Gamecocks will host the 2010 JSU/Adidas Gamecock Classic on Friday and Sunday.

This year's field includes Ohio Valley Conference member Austin Peay along with Southeastern Louisiana and Southern (La.) University. The first of four matches on the weekend will get underway at 5 p.m. as APSU and SU will tangle in the opening match. JSU and SLU will kick off at 7:30 p.m. The first 100 students will receive free pizza at the JSU match.

Jax State is coming off a four-match road trip that included stops in Las Cruces, N.M., Itta bena, Miss. and Jackson, Miss. The Gamecocks recorded their first win of the season last Friday at Mississippi Valley State. In its last outing, JSU played to a 1-1 overtime draw with Jackson State last Sunday.

Juniors Chelsea Pelletier and Lindsay Boehmler lead team in goals with two each. Pelletier sparked JSU in the 2-0 win over MVSU. Boehmler scored the equalizing goal against Jackson State on Sunday. The Gamecock defense was keyed by junior Emily Bielaga, who was named OVC Defensive Player of the week for her efforts last weekend, after aiding in Pelletier's goal and logged valuable minutes in the last two outings.

The Lady Govs of APSU enter the weekend as one of the hottest teams in the OVC. APSU started the season with five straight wins before dropping its first match of the season to Troy last Sunday. APSU leads the conference in shots with 103 through six games. SLU sports a 4-0-1 mark on the season after posting a 1-1 draw on Wednesday with Southern Mississippi. JSU looks to continue a string of wins over the Green and Gold Lions as it has claimed all four previous matches on the pitch. SU treks to Jacksonville with a 0-3-1 record after falling to SLU last Sunday.

Sunday's matches will get underway at Noon with SLU and APSU, followed by JSU and SU at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free to all JSU soccer matches.
