GLENCOE, Ala. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team stretched its lead in the Chris Banister Golf Classic to 17 shots after Monday's final round at Silver Lakes, while junior
Lucia Fernandez Valdes jumped into first place on the individual leader board.
Fernandez Valdes fired an even-par 72 on the 5,943-yard layout on Monday to take a four-shot lead into Tuesday's final round of the 54-hole tournament. The San Juan, Argentina, native is one over (73-72-145) through 36 holes, passing Mercer's Lacey Fears atop the leader board.
The Gamecocks have six players in the top 17, including sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez, who is playing as an individual. Her 73 on Monday moved her into a tie with junior
Astrid Parsson (75-75-150) for third place. Sophomore
Ornella Arrizon (75-76-151) is tied for fifth, while freshman Lourdes Lopez (81-77-158) is in 16th. Senior
Laura Cutler (77-82-159) sits in 17th place headed into Tuesday's final 18 holes.
After turning in their second-straight 300, the Gamecocks lead defending champion Lamar (617) by 17 shots, while Mercer (622) occupies third in the seven-team field. Florida Gulf Coast (630) is in fourth, while Butler (636) and Samford (636) are tied for fifth. Evansville (649) rounds out the field.
Fears (72-77-149) enters Tuesday's round four shots behind Fernandez Valdes, while Lamar's Julie Aime (76-75-151) rounds out the top five in a tie with Arrizon.
The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m., with JSU starting at 8:10 a.m.
