Gamecocks Take Round One Lead At Chris Banister Classic

GLENCOE, Ala. – The Jacksonville State women's golf team put four players in the top eight on Sunday to take a nine-shot lead after the first day of the annual Chris Banister Golf Classic at Silver Lakes Golf Course.

Junior Lucia Fernandez Valdez fired a one-over 73 to tie for second on the individual leaderboard and lead the Gamecocks to a 300 in their first round of competition of the season. JSU leads defending champion Lamar by nine shots after the first round of the 54-hole tournament, while Fernandez and Lamar's Katelyn McDougal trail Lacey Fears of Mercer by one shot.

Junior transfer Astrid Parsson made an impact in her first round with the Gamecocks, carding a three-over 75 to tie JSU sophomore Ornella Arrizon for fourth. Senior Laura Cutler's 77 put her in a tie for eighth and was the final score that JSU would count on the day. Freshman Lourdes Lopez Caballo shot an 81 in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Luz Armijo Fernandez, playing as an individual, turned in a 77 to tie Cutler for eighth.

Former Atlantic Sun Conference rivals Samford and Mercer finished the day tied for third, each with a 315 team total, while Florida Gulf Coast (316), Evansville (319) and Butler (327) rounded out the seven-team field.

The second round of play on the 5,943-yard layout will begin on Monday at 10:08 a.m. The Gamecocks will begin their day at 11:20 a.m. Admission is free to all days of the tournament.
