Gamecocks Split On Final Day of Hokie Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Jacksonville State volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Virginia Tech Hokie Classic on Saturday, claiming a 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17) win over Coastal Carolina before being swept 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 26-24) to host Virginia Tech.

Junior Lauren Harkins and senior Caitlin Vorbeck earned all-tournament honors for the Gamecocks (4-3), who went 2-1 over the weekend after sweeping Long Island to open play on Friday. The Hokies (6-1) won the tourney with the win over JSU.

In the early match, JSU took control over the Chanticleers (0-5) in the first set and never looked back. The Gamecocks used a 34-dig effort from Harkins to limit CCU to an .082 attack percentage. The Louisville, Ky., native finished her impressive weekend with 6.9 digs per set to lead a stingy Gamecock defense.

Vorbeck, who averaged 3.5 kills and 2.5 digs per set over the tourney, put down 16 kills and picked up 12 digs against the Chanticleers to pick up her first double-double of the year. The Raytown, Mo., native also put back six blocks up front on the defensive side of the net.

Sophomore Alyx Schulte was the only other Gamecock in double figures in the kills category with 11, while senior Brooke Schumacher dished out 36 assists.

CCU was led on offense by Chelsy Kimes' 13 kills and on defense by Lindsay Gill's 18 digs.

In the nightcap, Virginia Tech held on for a slim 27-25 win and then put JSU's back against the wall with the 25-13 win in set No. 2. Vorbeck was the driving force behind the Gamecock's offensive efforts with 14 kills, while senior Kara Slater added eight on a .375 attack percentage. Harkins led all players with 12 digs on the back row.

The Hokies got 11 kills from tourney MVP Cara Baarendse and 12 digs from Amy Wengrenovich.

JSU will wrap up its non-conference schedule next weekend, when they travel to Denver for the Pioneer Classic. The Gamecocks will play four matches in the event, beginning with a Friday showdown with Texas A&M. They will face Notre Dame and host Denver on Saturday before wrapping up the weekend against Gonzaga on Sunday.
