Itta Bena, Miss. – Jacksonville State notched its first win of the season with a 2-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State in women's college soccer action on Friday night.
The Gamecocks put their first goal on the board with ten minutes left in the opening half as junior
Chelsea Pelletier registered her second goal of the year with a breakaway goal that was aided by
Emily Bielaga. JSU's second goal came off the foot of
Ariel Jones in the second half. Nearing the 60th minute, Jones carded her first goal of the season off a deflection.
Nathalee Lariviere dished out the assist on the goal.
“A win is a win. They all count at the end of the day,” said head coach Julie Carlson Davis. “We missed many opportunities tonight. It was another measure of this team's versatility when we were able to move players around and play people that haven't seen the field much. I am proud of the fight our team generated to secure their first win of the season.”
Current Ohio Valley Conference Co-Goalkeeper of the Week
Ali Koenig recorded a shutout after playing all 90 minutes in the net. MVSU has yet to post a goal on the Gamecocks in four matches played between the two schools on the pitch.
“I thought Mississippi Valley State improved from last year. They made things strategically difficult with an offsides trap,” added Carlson. We had to look to be more creative tonight and I though we did a better job of that in the second half.”
Jax State remains in the state of Mississippi as it plays it second of three-straight Southwestern Athletic Conference foes with a 2 p.m. Sunday affair with Jackson State.
