Gamecock Volleyball Drops Two At Belmont Invitational

NASHVILLE – The Jacksonville State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, when Miami (Ohio) and Belmont handed the Gamecocks 3-0 losses on the final day of the Belmont Invitational.

After downing Memphis on Friday night, the Gamecocks (1-2) were swept by Miami, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) on Saturday morning before Belmont earned a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) win in the tournament finale.

In the opening match of the day, JSU mustered just a .154 attack percentage, while Miami hit .232. Seniors Caitlin Vorbeck and Kara Slater led the Gamecock offense with eight and seven kills, respectively.

Junior Lauren Harkins had a match-high 15 digs, while freshman Kelly Cole added seven.

Jenn Caylor's 10 kills made her the lone player in the match in double figures, while Colleen Loftus recorded 10 digs for the Redhawks.

In the nightcap, Belmont hit .231 as a team while holding JSU to an .056 percentage that was hampered by 22 attack errors. Kayla Albritton and Maggie Johnson had 14 and 12 kills, respectively, for the Bruins, while Johnson's 11 digs gave her a double-double.

JSU was led on offense by sophomore Alyx Schulte, who had eight kills to go along with seven digs on the back row. Vorbeck added six kills on offense, while Harkins and freshman Abbey Heredia had nine and eight digs, respectively.

The Gamecocks will return home, where they will play their home opener on Tuesday against Kennesaw State. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Pete Mathews Coliseum, and admission is free for all fans.
