Crowe Says Gamecocks Are Behind Schedule Following Tuesday's Scrimmage

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State head football coach Jack Crowe said his team is off schedule and a little behind following Tuesday's scrimmage at Burgess-Snow Field.

“Right now, we are off schedule, due to injuries primarily,” the 11th year head coach said. “I don't know how quickly we can get on schedule.

“It's not a two practice deal, but I think it's a process,” Crowe added. “We've had to move people around and adjust what we try and get done with some of our schemes and positions. The work and attitude of the guys is outstanding and we will catch up when time allows it.”

Jax State scrimmaged for just over two hours, working primarily on the kicking game, which has become a focus this season.

“We had a scripted scrimmage that put a lot of emphasis on the kicking game,” said Crowe. “We have a very strong commitment to have a better kicking game. We've lost games to kicking and turnovers when we've lost in the league and I think it deserves an emphasis.”

Crowe mentioned the play of sophomore safety Brooks Robinson, following the 92-play scrimmage.

“The one guy that stuck out today to me is Brooks Robinson,” Crowe said. “He has a dominating personality and he's out there trying to make something happen and I was very impressed with him.”

Robinson, from Opelika, was originally signed as a quarterback, but was moved to the defensive side of the ball last year and is a play maker on special teams.

Tuesday marked the final practice before school starts on Wednesday and Crowe said he wanted to give his players some extra time to prepare for classes.

“We start school tomorrow and we will give them 36 hours to get ready for classes,” Crowe said. “We wanted to allow them extra time to getting their books, getting to know who their professors are and having it all fit together.”

Jacksonville State opens the 2010 season on Sept. 4 at Ole Miss. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be carried live on CSS television.
