Gamecocks Fall 3-2 In Double OT To Georgia State

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State's women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 double overtime match to Georgia State on a scorching Sunday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.

After both squads played to a 2-2 score at the end of regulation and the first overtime stanza, GSU's Jewel Evans drilled the game-winning goal three minutes deep into the session.

GSU took an early 2-0 lead by the 17-minute mark after goals by Kaila Mueke and Sarah Bennett. The Gamecocks scratched the scoreboard for their first goal of the contest after Chelsea Pelletier punch it on off a keeper defection in the 27th minute. The Red and White posted the equalizing goal in the 79th minute as Lindsay Boehmler carded her first goal of the season. Freshman Amy Meehan dished out her first collegiate assist on the goal.

“I thought we fought really hard to get back into the match,” said head coach Julie Davis Carlson. “They did what we asked of them to do to equalize the match. Our non-conference season is tough. We have to learn how to be successful against these quality teams.”

The Panthers out-shot Jax State 20-11 and had five scoring opportunities in the extra periods. Pelletier, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, led JSU with three shot attempts. Alex Rustad and Nathalee Lariviere carded a pair of shots, including on goal for Lariviere. Bennett paced the GSU offense with four shot attempts.

The Gamecocks will now embark on a four-match road trip that begins next Friday, Aug, 27 in Las Cruces, N.M. JSU will compete in the Hotel Encanto Aggie Classic, hosted by New Mexico State. The Gamecocks will square off with the host-Aggies on Friday at 8 p.m. CST before taking on North Texas on Sunday, Aug. 29.

“These are two tough opponents coming up for us and I think it will be a level that we need to see,” added Carlson.

JSU returns to the JSU Soccer Field on Sept. 10 and 12, hosting the Adidas/JSU Gamecock Classic. This year's field includes Southern (La.) University, Southeastern Louisiana and Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay.
