Gardner-Webb Spoils JSU Soccer's Home Opener, 2-0

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State dropped a 2-0 decision to Gardner-Webb on Friday night in women's college soccer action at the JSU Soccer Field. The match marked the season opener for both squads.

The Runnin' Bulldogs (1-0) got off to a quick start, scoring both goals in the first eight minutes of the contest. GWU kept the Gamecocks (0-1) at bay the entire contest as it finished with 13 shots, compared to JSU's eight.

Both of GWU's goals came off the foot of junior Megan Reimer. Her fist goal came in the second minute of the contest, while the second goal came at the 7:41 mark of the opening half. Stephanie Benshoof was credited with assists on both goals.

Freshman Alison Gonzalez, from Roswell, Ga., had one of JSU's three shots on goal. She finished with a pair of shot attempts to lead the Red and White. Lindsay Boehmler also connected on a pair of shots.

“There is a lot to take away from this game,” said head coach Julie Davis Carlson. “This certainly is not the way we wanted to come and play, but we can learn from this.”

JSU continues its season-opening weekend on Sunday, Aug. 22, hosting Georgia State. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. at the JSU Soccer Field.

Carlson spotted some bright spots in her club that they can build on for Sunday's match and into the season.

“We showed that we are progressing, no one is happy with the outcome.”

Admission is free to all JSU home matches.
