JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State held its first full scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday and head coach Jack Crowe called it a depth chart scrimmage and was especially impressed with the Gamecock receiving corp.

“It was a depth chart scrimmage and we found out some things about our team,” Crowe said following the 89-play scrimmage. “I like our receivers. Without reaching out and picking one and saying how specatular they were, that's a good group of football players, top to bottom.”

The Gamecocks had 12 different receivers that caught a pass in the scrimmage, led by Jeffrey Cameron with 39 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown catch. Kevyn Cooper had a pair of catches for 33 yards, while Jahron Brown had three catches for 21 yards and LaRay Williams had two catches for 20 yards.

Starting quarterback Marquis Ivory didn't have his best day on the field, but that didn't concern Crowe.

“I thought Marquis kind of missed today,” said Crowe. “He runs 11 people out there and although his productivity wasn't really high, I saw a guy who was in charge and running the show for us.”

Ivory was 6-for-12 for 47 yards, while backup Coty Blanchard led the three quarterbacks by completing 7-for-13 for 114 yards and a touchdown. Steven Coates was 5-for-8 for 56 yards.

Crowe did praise the play of runningback Richard Freelon, along with the play of Blanchard.

“Richard Freelon had to carry the whole load today as he was the only running back available,” added Crowe. “He was a man out there before his time. Coty was a man out there before his time. Some of these young players are playing way up.”

Freelon led the team with 59 yards on 17 carries, while Jahron Brown had 15 carries for 19 yards.

Crowe also said that Blanchard would be the Gamecocks punter heading into the season opener at Ole Miss in three weeks.

Jacksonville State will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field on Monday. The team will hold its annual Fan Day on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m., at Burgess-Snow Field.
