Gamecock Soccer Picked Eighth In OVC

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – With the 2010 season just around the corner, the Jacksonville State soccer team has been selected eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, announced by the league on Tuesday.

The poll was conducted by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

Sixth-year head coach Julie Davis Carlson and her squad report to campus on Thursday for preseason drills. The Gamecocks open the 2010 slate with back-to-back home matches on Aug. 20 and 22 against Gardner Webb and Georgia State, respectively. Davis' Gamecocks will take to the JSU Soccer field nine times this season, highlighted by the Adidas Gamecock Classic on Sept. 10 and 12. Jax State begins league play on Sept. 24 against Southeast Missouri.

Reigning OVC Tournament champion Murray State was selected the conference favorite, edging out Morehead State, who claimed a share of the regular season crown a year ago. UT Martin, Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky rounded out the top five spots.

JSU will travel to Kennesaw, Ga., on Aug. 14 to take on Kennesaw State in an exhibition match. Match time is set for 6 p.m. The game will mark the first ever in the brand new KSU Soccer Stadium, which will hold 8,300. The facility is the largest women's-only soccer stadium in the world. The on-campus facility will also be home to the Atlanta Beat of the Women's Professional Soccer league.
