Roane Leaves JSU Hoops to Return Home

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville State assistant coach Kyle Roane has left the JSU men's basketball team and accepted a job at his high school alma mater, head coach James Green has announced.

Roane, who was Green's first addition to his staff when he arrived at JSU in 2008, served as his top assistant for the last two seasons. He leaves to take over the head coaching duties at Forrest County Agricultural High School in his hometown of Brooklyn, Miss.

“Kyle has been a very valuable part of what we've been able to accomplish in laying a foundation in this program,” Green said of his longtime assistant. “I wish him the best as a professional and certainly, as a friend.”

Roane joined Green for his first two seasons at JSU from Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, Miss., where he was the Bobcats' head coach for two years. Prior to that, he served as an assistant on Green's staff at Southern Miss for seven years.

Barnes Not Returning
Guard John Barnes will not be back with the Gamecocks for his junior season after Green announced his scholarship wouldn't be renewed for the 2010-11 campaign.

Barnes, a 5-foot-10 point guard from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., was part of Green's first signing class at JSU and served as a reserve in the Gamecocks' backcourt for the past two years. As a sophomore in 2009-10, Barnes played in all 30 games, averaging 4.6 points and 1.7 assists per game.

He was a .356 shooter from the floor, including a .329 clip from behind the arc. His 51 assists were even with his 51 turnovers from the point guard spot.

“We wish John the best as he continues to pursue his basketball career,” Green said. “He is a great young man that has made several contributions to this program over the past two years.”
