AUBURN – Jacksonville State's baseball season came to an end on Saturday, when the Gamecocks fell 19-6 to Southern Miss in an elimination game at the 2010 NCAA Auburn Regional.

The Golden Eagles (36-23) used three three-run home runs to pull away from the Gamecocks (32-26) and turned it over to their closer. Collin Cargill entered the game in the second inning and limited JSU to one run on seven hits over a career-long 7 2/3 innings on the hill.

The Gamecocks got multiple hits from four players, including a 3-for-5 outing from senior Steven Leach. In his final game in a JSU uniform, the Decatur, Ala., native ran his career hits total to 233, which ranks seventh in school history. He rounds out a group of four players on the JSU roster that are in that top seven, led by career hits leader Bert Smith.

Smith, a senior from Helena, Ala., notched one hit in the game to stretch his career total to a JSU and OVC record 323. He entered the game as the only active player in Division I baseball with 300 career hits. Senior Daniel Adamson, who is fourth on that list, went 2-for-4 to end his career with 246 hits, while junior Todd Cunningham's 2-for-5 day allowed him to finish the year in sixth with 238.

Sophomore Jay Davis, the Gamecocks' designated hitter in the game, also picked up a pair of hits, including a solo home run in his postseason at bat. He finished the game with two RBI, tied with Leach for the team lead on the day. Senior Adrew Edge drove in a run on one hit, while sophomore Kyle Bluestein did the same.

Smith also swiped a bag in the game, extending his single-season record to 36 and his career record to 107.

Southern Miss got four RBI and four runs scored and a 4-for-4 afternoon from Taylor Walker, who joined B.A. Vollmuth and Adam Doleac as the three Golden Eagles with three-run homers in the game. Vollmuth and Tyler Koelling each went 3-for-5 in the game.

JSU starter Hunter Rivers had a short outing on the hill, allowing three runs on two walks and one hit, a three-run homer to right by Doleac that gave the Golden Eagles an early 3-0 lead. The blast chased Rivers after retiring just one out and forced head coach Jim Case to call on Jordan Beistline out of the bullpen.

Jacksonville State got two of the three runs back in the home half of the first after the Gamecocks rattled off three hits that included RBI singles from Edge and Bluestein. Walker answered in the second with the Golden Eagles' second three-run homer in as many innings to push the lead to 7-2.

The Gamecocks put up three in the home half of the inning, thanks to a leadoff homer from Davis and a two-run single by Leach that cut the deficit to 7-5. After a pair of zeros went on the board in the third, USM put it out of reach with four runs in the fourth.

They would add runs in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, while JSU would only get one more in the sixth.

Rivers (3-4) took the loss on the mound, while Cargill (4-2) earned the win.
