Gamecocks Sweep Morehead State with 21-10 Win on Saturday

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Todd Cunningham, Kyle Bluestein and Steven Leach each slugged two home runs as Jacksonville State tied a school Division I record with seven homers as the Gamecocks cruised to a 21-10 win over Morehead State to earn the Ohio Valley Conference sweep on Saturday.

The Gamecocks improve to 29-24 and finish with the most wins in the OVC with a 15-8 mark and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's OVC Championship. Morehead State finishes the season with a 24-25-1 mark and 6-12-1 in the conference.

Aaron Elias (2-1) had three strikeouts to earn the win, while Alex Jones allowed just three hits over the final 3 1/3 innings to earn his sixth save of the year. MSU's Tyler Hieneman (1-3) gave up nine runs in just one inning to suffer the loss.

Jax State took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run homer by Bluestein, the extended the lead to 9-1 in the second after the Gamecocks hit three home runs in the inning. Cunningham had a three-run homer, Leach added a two-run homer and Sam Eberle had a solo shot for the Gamecocks.

Morehead scored a run in each of the first three innings to cut the lead to 9-3, but the Gamecocks added a run in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 11-3 lead.

The Eagles then scored five runs in the home half of the fifth inning, highlighted by a grand slam by Andrew Deeds to cut the lead to 11-8, and then added two more in the sixth inning after Deeds drove in two more runs with a double to cut the lead to 11-10.

Jax State then put the game out of reach after scoring eight runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by Bluestein and a two-run home run by Cunningham, as the Gamecocks took a 19-10 lead.

JSU added two more runs in the ninth inning on a two-RBI double by Blake Seguin for the final margin.

Seguin led the Gamecocks with four hits, while Cunningham, Leach and Bluestein each added three hits. Eberle and Bert Smith each had a pair of hits as the Gamecocks finished with 19 hits in the game. Smith also broke his own school single-season record after he stole his 32nd base of the season, passing his 2007 mark of 31 stolen bases.

The Gamecocks batted a season-high .417 in the three-game series with 19 home runs, eight doubles and one triple as they scored 48 runs on 53 hits vs Morehead State. Bluestein finished with five home runs, while Eberle and Adamson each had four homers, Leach, Cunningham and Cal Lambert each added two homers in the series.

Jacksonville State earned a bye in the first round of next week's Ohio Valley Conference Championship, which will be hosted at Pringles Park in Jackson, Tennessee. The Gamecocks will play at 3 p.m. vs the highest seed winner from Wednesday.
