Four Gamecocks Earn All-OVC Softball Honors

MARTIN, Tenn. – Jacksonville State placed four players on the 2010 All-Ohio Valley Conference squads, the league announced at its pre-tournament banquet on the campus of UT Martin on Wednesday night.

Senior outfielders Chrissy O'Neal and Hillary Downs and junior second baseman Sallie Beth Burch received first team honors, while Burch and junior third baseman Amanda Crow were named to the league's All-Newcomer Team. The four were honored prior to Thursday's start to the 2010 OVC Championship, which will be hosted by regular season champion UT Martin.

O'Neal, an outfielder from Dallas, Ga., received First-Team All-OVC recognition for the third-straight season after being named to the league's second team as a freshman. She joins Daniela Pappano, Christine Tucker, Lauren Buck and current JSU assistant Julie Boland as the only four-time all-conference players in school history. Downs, a native of Childersburg, Ala., received first-team laurels for the first time in her two-year JSU career after she was a second-team and All-Newcomer selection as a junior in 2009.

O'Neal led the team with a .361 average in 2010, while her 37 runs and 53 hits were also team highs. In league games, she posted a .373 average, thanks to a .464 clip over the team's past 10 games. In the final week of the season, she tied school records for home runs (2) and RBI (7) in a single game, while also joining Pappano as the only two players in school history to reach the 40 home run mark. She enters the tourney in the top five in JSU history in at bats (727), runs (167), hits (244), doubles (42) and homers (40).

Downs led the Gamecocks with nine home runs and 32 RBI in her senior campaign, while posting a .358 average that was second only to O'Neal. She hit .391 with eight homers and 23 RBI in league games, a stretch that was bolstered by a .406 average over the past 10 games. Downs also recorded seven doubles, a triple and six stolen bases on the year, while committing just one error in center field in 53 chances. She enters the weekend in eighth in JSU's record books with a .357 career average and 10th with 21 career steals.

Burch, a native of Moulton, Ala., who transferred to JSU from Wallace State Community College, made a huge impact for the Gamecocks and in the OVC. She led the OVC with a .417 average in league play, while posting a .288 average on the year. Burch hit four home runs and drove in 18 runs in her debut season to also receive All-Newcomer recognition.

Joining her on the All-Newcomer squad is Crow, a native of Sharpsburg, Ga., that transferred to the Gamecocks from Georgia Perimeter College. After struggling to start the season, Crow came alive down the stretch, batting .367 with six of her eight home runs in league play. During the Gamecocks recent 16-4 run, she has hit .333 with seven homers and 19 RBI.

The Gamecocks earned the tourney's No. 2 seed after winning their last eight league games and 16 of their last 20 overall. They will begin the double-elimination event at 4 p.m. on Thursday against the winner of the 11 a.m. game between third-seeded Morehead State and sixth-seeded Tennessee Tech. All of the Gamecocks' games in the tourney will be broadcast on the JSU Radio Network.
