O'Neal Blasts Gamecocks to Doubleheader Sweep of TSU

GAME 1 BOX SCORE  | GAME 2 BOX SCORE

JACKSONVILLE – Chrissy O'Neal got her final weekend at University Field off to an impressive start on Saturday, when she guided the Jacksonville State softball team to 5-1 and 12-4 wins in a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee State.

The Dallas, Ga., native tied school records with two home runs and seven RBI in the second game of the day, capping a twinbill that saw her go 6-for-7 with four runs scored. She homered twice in a game for the third time in her career and the 17th time in JSU's history, while tying teammate Allison Svoboda's record of seven RBI in a single game.

With the sweep, the Gamecocks (26-17, 12-6 Ohio Valley Conference) moved past Morehead State into second place in the league standings with just one game remaining in the regular season. JSU can secure the No. 2 seed in next week's conference tournament on Sunday with either a win over the Tigers (11-33, 6-15 OVC) or a Morehead loss at regular season champion UT Martin.

On Saturday, JSU dominated the Tigers at the plate and in the field, hitting .421 as a team while holding TSU to a .149 team average. O'Neal's two homers gave her 40 in her career, making her just the second player in school history to reach that milestone, and led a Gamecock offense that belted four homers and five doubles on the day. Fellow senior Nikki Prier went 4-for-7 with two doubles and two RBI on the afternoon, while sophomore Tess Echols recorded three hits in seven at bats.

In the circle, junior Ashley Eliasson (17-7) earned the win in the first game and went the final two innings of the nightcap to earn her first save of the season. Freshman Hilary Phillips (9-10) picked up the win in the second game.

In the opener, Prier doubled twice to drive a 4-for-4 effort that saw her drive in a pair of runs. Her two doubles give her 61 in her career, joining Daniela Pappano as the only players in school history with 60 or more doubles in a career. She led a 10-hit attack by the Gamecocks in the opener, one that got started with a two-run single by junior Amanda Crow in the bottom of the first.

Eliasson went the distance for the Gamecocks in game one, limiting the Tigers to a run on two hits in her 17th complete game of the season. She walked one and struck out three in the win.

Hannah Schnebly (6-9) suffered the loss for the Tigers after allowing four runs, two earned, on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings of work. Brittany Webb doubled and Christy Hill singled to account for both of their offense.

In the second game of the day, O'Neal got her record-breaking 4-for-4 game started on the second pitch she saw. Her leadoff home run easily cleared the wall in right center and answered a run by the Tigers in the top of the inning.

The Gamecocks claimed a 2-1 lead in the second on a solo homer by sophomore Kaycee Crow, but a two-run homer by Webb in the third put the Tigers back on top, 3-2. They would hold that advantage until the fourth, when O'Neal's second homer of the day, a three-run blast to right center, gave JSU the lead for good at 5-3.

Tedra Alford cut the TSU deficit to 5-4 with a leadoff homer in the fifth, chasing Phillips from the circle and bringing in Eliasson in a save situation. After Phillips allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits in four innings of work. The Ider, Ala., native struck out three before giving way to Eliasson, who held the Tigers scoreless on one hit over the final two innings.

The Gamecocks got four more in the fifth, thanks to a two-run single from O'Neal and RBI hits from Echols and freshman Kelci Johnston. Senior Hillary Downs belted a two-run homer in the sixth before O'Neal's walk-off single gave the Gamecocks the deciding 12-4 advantage and ended the game via the mercy rule.

For the Tigers in the circle, Megan Hedrick (3-8) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits and three walks in four innings in the circle. Caitlin Eaton went 2-for-3 to lead them at the plate.

The two will conclude the regular season at 1 p.m. on Sunday with a single game. It will be Senior Day at University Field, where a pregame ceremony honoring the team's four seniors will take place before the game. Admission is free.
