NEW ORLEANS
– The Alabama State University women's track and field team completed their dominating weekend performance by claiming the conference title at the 2010 SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Tad Gormley Stadium.

The Lady Hornets cruised to their fifth conference crown in the past nine years finishing the four-day event with a total of 214 points, well ahead of second-place finisher Prairie View A&M with 126. The championship marks the first outdoor title for the ASU women since 2007 and gives the program an indoor/outdoor sweep of the SWAC Championships for the fourth time in school history. Bama State also claimed the track and field double in 2002, 2003 and 2005.

ASU head coach Ritchie Beene earned the Coach of the Year on the women's side giving him a sweep of the season honors while Shexnieavia Bryant was named the Outstanding Field Performer after scoring 27 points in the meet. Bryant, who also earned the Outstanding Field Performer honor at the SWAC Indoor Championships, won the discus, finished second in the hammer throw, was third in the shot put and posted a sixth-place showing in the javelin.

On Sunday, the Lady Hornets earned four individual event titles en route to earning the conference championship. Alabama State saw 16 athletes score points in 13 events on the final day.

Clarissa Johnson won the high jump with a leap of 5'04.25” and Bryant captured the discus crown with a toss of 141'04”. Dawn Hermanes claimed the 100m title in a time of 11.69 and was also a member of ASU's championship 4x100m relay squad.

Any athlete that finished first or second in the event finals at the SWAC Championship garnered All-SWAC honors.

The 2010 SWAC Track and Field Championships marked the end of the regular season for the ASU women's squad. Several athletes will compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 14 with hopes of posting a qualifying mark for the NCAA East Regional on May 27-29 in Greensboro, N.C.
