ASU Excels in Field Events at SWAC Track Championship

ASU looks to earn another SWAC Track title on Sunday
**Complete Results Thru Day 3**

NEW ORLEANS
– The Alabama State University women's track and field team extended its lead atop the standings while the ASU men's team remained in the hunt for a championship following the third day of competition at the 2010 SWAC Track & Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium.

After eight completed events, the Lady Hornets have tallied 96 points and lead second-place Prairie View (53) by 43 points heading in the final day. ASU is in fifth-place with 21 points on the men's side with Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the lead with 72 points followed by Jackson State with 63.

Saturday's schedule included qualifying heats in all the sprints along with event finals in several field events and the 3,000m steeplechase.

ASU's three event championships included Beldon Ferguson in the men's long jump, Melissa Romelus in the women's javelin and Kesia Derilus in the women's 3,000m steeplechase. Ferguson captured his title with a leap of 25'07.50” while Romelus posted a toss of 123'03” and Derilus finished in a time of 11:48.87.

Any athlete that finishes first or second in the event finals at the SWAC Championship garners All-SWAC honors.

Bama State also had several other athletes score points during day three action. On the women's side, Asha Tavernier finished fifth in the long jump and Raheema Hodges earned a fourth-place showing in the steeplechase. Shexnieavia Bryant, Shanice Mells and Romelus all scored points in both the shot put and javelin. Tyrisha Chambers also collected an eighth-place finish in the javelin for ASU.

In addition to posting strong event final performances, Alabama State advanced athletes into nine of Sunday's sprint event finals. Charles Flewellen (800m), Dawn Hermanes (200m) and Tokeyah Jones (100m) were all the top event qualifiers during the preliminary round.

The 2010 SWAC Track and Field Championships conclude Sunday with final heats in all the sprints and relays plus event finals for the discus, triple jump and high jump.
