NEW ORLEANS
– Alabama State University freshman Tyrisha Chambers captured the heptathlon title Friday in helping push the ASU women's track and field team to the top of the standings after two days of competition at the 2010 SWAC Track & Field Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium.

After four completed events, the Lady Hornets have 47 points compared to just 23 for current second-place squad Arkansas-Pine Bluff. ASU is tied for third with 11 points on the men's side, but is only seven points behind current leader UAPB (18 points).

Chambers completed a wire-to-wire dominance for the conference title, easily winning by 416 points. She won five of the seven individual events in the heptathlon, including the long jump and javelin on Friday, and cruised to the victory with a conference meet record 4,811 points. Texas Southern's Selena Fudge was second with 4,395 points, while ASU's Rayanna Johnson finished fifth with 3,550 points.

In addition, a quartet of ASU throwers scored points in the hammer throw led by Shexnieavia Bryant's second-place toss of 151'11”. Ciara Taborn finished third at 146'11” followed by Shanice Mells in fourth (139'03”) and Melissa Romelus in fifth (131'10”). Tanisha Boulware posted a second-place finish in the pole vault after reaching the 9'10” mark.

Jeffery Adams provided the Hornets with their only points of the day finishing fourth in the decathlon. The sophomore multi-event performer boasted the fastest time in the 110m hurdles during the decathlon.

Any athlete that finishes first or second in the event finals at the SWAC Championship garners All-SWAC honors meaning Chambers picked up a first-team accolade in the heptathlon and Bryant and Boulware each earn second-team distinctions in the hammer throw and pole vault, respectively.

The 2010 SWAC Track and Field Championships continue Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium with preliminary heats in the sprint and hurdle events plus event finals for the 3,000m steeplechase, shot put, long jump, javelin and men's pole vault.
