Track & Field Opens Competition at SWAC Championship

ASU squad has solid first day at SWAC Championship

NEW ORLEANS
-- The 2010 SWAC Track and Field Championships began Thursday at Tad Gormley Stadium with competition in the heptathon, decathlon and the 10,000 meters. Alabama State had several athletes post strong showings in the opening events.

ASU's Tyrisha Chambers won three of the four heptathlon events contested accruing 2,976 points and building a 290 point lead after day one. Her teammate, Ryananna Johnson, is in sixth place after amassing 2,413 points Thursday.

In the decathlon, Bama State's Jeffery Adams ended the first day in fifth after totalling 3,142 points thru five events.

Jepthah Kenei earned the first points of the meet for the ASU men after finishing third in the 10,000m run in a time of 33:11.10. Raheema Hodges finished seventh in the women's 10,000m with a time of 48:05.90 to score points for the Lady Hornets.

Day two begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. with the completion of the heptathlon and decathlon followed by field event finals in men's and women's hammer throw along with the women's pole vault.  Field events are set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
