JSU Sets OVC Women's Golf Tournament Record During Friday's Second Round

DICKSON, Tenn. – Jacksonville State set an Ohio Valley Conference tournament record with a low score of 294 during Friday's second round and is just five shots back with nine holes to play at the 2010 OVC Women's Golf Championship, played at the par-72, 6,049 yard GreyStone Golf Club.

The teams played 27 holes on Friday due to uncertain weather conditions on Saturday. The teams will attempt to play the final nine holes on Saturday, beginning with 8 a.m. tee times.

Murray State improved its second round by eight strokes from the opening round to hold the lead. In the first nine holes of the final round, MSU was 1-under for a 747 for the 54-hole event. Jax State is five shots back (+32), followed by Murray State (+39), Austin Peay (+49), Eastern Kentucky (+58), Eastern Illinois (+77), Tennessee Tech (+87) and Tennessee State (+237).

The Gamecocks, which hold four of the five lowest rounds in OVC Women's Tournament History, broke their own 18-hole tournament record of 300 (set in 2006) during Friday's second round with a team total of 294.

Jax State has all five golfers in the top 15, led by Lucia Fernandez's fourth place finish (+6), while Laura Cutler is tied for seventh at plus-8. Luz Armijo is tied for 13th at plus-13 and Ashley Cox is one shot back in 15th place.

Austin Peay junior Chelsea Harris is still the individual leader, shooting a 2-over round of 74 in the second round and following that with a 1-under score in the first half of the third round. Her two stroke lead after the first day has increased to five strokes now over a duo of golfers.

Jacksonville State will try and claim its fifth OVC Women's Golf Championship over the final nine holes of the 54-hole event on Saturday. Live stats are available at JSUGamecockSports.com.
