JSU Hoops Adds Pair of Point Guards For 2010-11

JACKSONVILLE – Head coach James Green added a pair of point guards to his Jacksonville State basketball program on Friday, when he announced the signing of Leke Lewu and Brian Williams.

Lewu, a 5-foot-11 junior college player from Daytona State College, and Williams, a 6-foot-3 prep star from Central Gwinnett High School in Lawrenceville, Ga., each signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Gamecocks this week and will join the program for the 2010-11 campaign.

Lewu played the last two seasons at Daytona State College, where he was a two-time all-conference and all-academic performer. As a sophomore in 2009-10, he led the Falcons to a 21-7 record, a No. 4 state ranking and their first Mid-Florida Conference crown in five seasons. He averaged 10 points, 5.7 assists, 3.7 boards and two steals per game while shooting 82 percent from the free throw line.

Also as a sophomore, Lewu shot 45 percent from the floor and 38 percent from behind the arc. As a freshman in 2008-09, he scored 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and dished out five assists per game. He prepped at J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs, Fla., where he earned All-Broward County recognition as a senior.

“Leke is a very solid player both offensively and defensively,” Green said. “He has outstanding leadership abilities and high character. He is another signee that helps us build the type of program that the University will be proud of.”

Williams led Central Gwinnett to a 29-3 record and a berth in the Georgia Class AAAAA Final Four after averaging 16 points, five assists, three steals and three rebounds per game. He was named the Gwinnett County and the region Player of the Year for his efforts in guiding the Black Knights to the region title.

An all-county selection, Williams received Player of the Month laurels in December, the same month in which he earned MVP honors in guiding the Black Knights to the title of the Jefferson Tip-Off Tourney. He scored a team-high 18 points in the semifinal loss to Westlake after pouring in 12 to help guide Central to a quarterfinal win. He was also an all-region performer as a junior and scored over 1,200 points in his varsity career for CGHS.

“We are pleased to add such a winner in Brian to our basketball program,” Green added. “He is a student-athlete that will grow with us and us with him.”
