Hillary Downs Named OVC Softball Player of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Jacksonville State senior Hillary Downs has been named the Ohio Valley Conference's Softball Player of the Week for her efforts in guiding the Gamecocks to a perfect 4-0 week, the league office announced on Monday.

Downs, a 5-foot-6 outfielder from Childersburg, Ala., was instrumental in the Gamecocks' record-setting week at the plate. She reached base in all but four of her 14 plate appearances on the week to spark a .667 average, while recording a double, a home run and five RBI.

Downs and the Gamecocks (23-16, 10-6 OVC) dealt Tennessee Tech an 8-5 loss on Wednesday before outscoring Eastern Kentucky 33-8 in a three-game sweep over the weekend. The sweep saw JSU hit well over .400 as a team and break the school record for runs scored in a conference series. On the week, all nine starters in the batting order homered at least once for a total of 11 round trippers over the four-game stretch.

Over the week, Downs recorded two hits in each of JSU's four games and drove in at least two runs in three of them. She scored a total of eight runs to go along with her five RBI. She opened the week with a 2-for-4, two RBI game against TTU before going 6-for-8 with two walks, a home run and three RBI in the sweep of the Colonels.

Downs' honor is the first of her two-year career at JSU and makes her the fifth different Gamecock to receive a weekly award this season. Chrissy O'Neal and Hilary Phillips earned Pitcher and Player of the Week honors, respectively, in the opening week, while Amanda Crow was named Player of the Week on April 5 and Ashley Eliasson Pitcher of the Week on April 12.

Downs and the Gamecocks are off during the week for finals but will be in action this weekend, when they travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., for a three-game series at Southeast Missouri. The set will start with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday with a 1 p.m. single game.
