Murray State Rallies for 9-6 Win Over Jax State

JACKSONVILLE – Murray State rallied for seven runs over the final three innings to claim a 9-6 win over Jacksonville State in the final game of the Ohio Valley Conference series at Rudy Abbott Field on Sunday.

Matt McGaha (2-0) scattered two hits over the final three innings to earn the win for Murray State, while Alex Jones gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings to get stuck with the loss.

Murray State scored one in the second inning and Cory Hodskins hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give the 'Breds a 2-0 lead, before the Gamecocks took the lead in the fifth inning.

Jake Sharrock and Blake Seguin led off with singles, while Todd Cunningham followed with a walk to load the bases. Bert Smith then had a two-RBI single through the ride side to tie the game at 2-2. Cunningham came across the plate on an Andrew Edge infield grounder to give JSU a 3-2 lead.

Jax State added a pair of runs in the sixth inning after Daniel Adamson led off with a solo home run to left center and Cunningham had a RBI double to give the Gamecocks a 5-2 advantage.

Murray State scored two runs in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Jason Laws and another run on a Gamecock error to cut the lead to 5-4.

The 'Breds took the lead for good in the eighth inning after Colton Moore and Laws each had RBI singles and Wes Cunningham scored on a JSU error to take a 7-5 lead.

Jax State cut the lead to 7-6 in the home half of the eighth after Adamson led off with with a solo home run to center field, his seventh homer of the season, but the 'Breds added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth for the final margin.

Hodskins had three hits to lead Murray State, while Sharrock had three hits to lead the Gamecocks. Cunningham, Smith and Adamson each added two more hits for Jax State.

Jacksonville State returns to action on Tuesday at Kennesaw State, before returning to Ohio Valley Conference play next weekend at Austin Peay.
