GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Competing against some of the nation's top track and field programs, Alabama State produced some impressive showings over the weekend including a pair of second-place relay finishes at the prestigious 66th-annual Pepsi Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida.
The ASU men's 4x800m relay team consisting of
Charles Flewellen,
Robert Gunn,
Delorean Peek and
Christopher Duncan led the way earning a second-place finish in a time of 7:21.46. The quartet's clocking eclipsed the previous Percy Beard Track record time and also marked the nation's second fastest time in the event this season with event winner Penn State (7:18.72) owning the top performance.
The Bama State women's 4x800m relay team also earned a runner-up showing after crossing the finish line in 9:28.63. The team included
Kesia Derilus, Raheema Hodges,
Breana Kelly and
Whitney Austin.
In addition, ASU's 4x200m women's relay team (
Lutrisha Altidor,
Dawn Hermanes,
Jamie Brooks,
Tokeyah Jones) earned a 13th-place finish in a time of 1:38.29, while the men's 4x200m relay team (
Vincent Butler,
Joshua Lockett,
Shawn Lockhart,
Jonathan Franklin) finished 13th in a clocking of 1:26.96. The Bama State men's 4x400m relay team (Peek, Flewellen, Butler, Franklin) posted a 14th-place finish in a time of 3:09.42.
Other top individual performers for ASU included: Beldon Ferguson (10th in men's long jump – 7.17m),
Tokeyah Jones (21st in women's 100m – 11.75),
Jonathan Franklin (15th in men's 400m – 47.49),
Delorean Peek (17th in 800m – 1:51.59) and
Robert Gunn (11th in 1500m – 3:49.07).
The ASU track and field teams continue their outdoor season Apr. 10 at the South Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Ala.
