HOUSTON – The Alabama State University track and field teams boasted a strong performance at the Texas Southern Relays held on March 19-20 including several event titles.
Clarissa Johnson captured the women's high jump title with a leap of 5'05” while the women's 4x800m relay squad cruised to a first-place showing in a time of 9:17.18. The championship team was comprised of
Whitney Austin,
Kesia Derilus, Raheema Hodges and
Breana Kelly.
The men's 4x800m relay team consisting of
Charles Flewellen,
Robert Gunn,
Delorean Peek and
Christopher Duncan and earned a first-place finish with a time of 7:33.73.
Johnson also earned a second-place finish in the 400m (1:01.34) to lead a list of solid performances for the Lady Hornets. Other top performers for the ASU women included: Tyrisha Chambers finished fourth in the 400m (1:05.23),
Tanisha Boulware was third in the pole vault (9'6.25”),
Asha Tavernier finished second in the long jump (17'7.5”), Melissa Romelus was third in the javelin (120'11”) and Shexnieava Bryant was fourth in the discus (129'03”) and fifth in the hammer (145'10”). In addition, ASU's 1600m sprint medley relay team (
Dawn Hermanes,
Tokeyah Jones,
Lutrisha Altidor,
Kesia Derilus) posted a runner-up finish in a time of 4:02.81.
On the men's side, Jepthah Kenei ran a 9:01.67 to finish sixth in the 3000m and the men's 1600m spring medley squad (
Shawn Lockhart,
Jonathan Franklin, Peek, Duncan) posted a second-place showing in a time of 3:24.12.
The ASU track and field teams continue their outdoor season Apr. 2-3 at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla.
