Gamecocks, Berlin In Second At Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate

Jacksonville State's Gonzalo Berlin shot a 1-under-par 71 in cold and wet conditions to sit in second place after the first round of Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate on Monday.

Monday was scheduled for 36 holes but rain and cold temperatures cut the day to 18 holes at the Par 72, 6,949 yards Silver Lakes Golf Course on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Berlin shot a 34 on the front nine and a 37 on the back nine to trail St. John's Mike Ballo, Jr., who shot a 2-under par 70 (37-33-70).

The Gamecocks finished the round 9-over par for a 297 and are one stroke behind the Red Storm's 8-over par 296.

JSU's Garrett Burgess is in a four-way tie for fourth with a 2-over 74 (38-36). Tom Robson and Andres Schonbaum are tied for 11th with a 4-over 76. Daniel Glidwell is tied for 26th with an 8-over 80 to round out JSU's designated team players.

Michael Watson (43-37-80) and Nathan Bennett (38-42-80), who are playing as individuals, are tied with Glidwell and Alfonso Otoya carded an 83 to tie for 42nd.

SIU Edwardsville is in third place in the team standings with a 303, six strokes behind JSU. Armstrong Atlantic State is fourth with a 309 followed by Stetson in fifth with a 311.

Defending Tournament Champion and 2009 OVC Champion Austin Peay is tied with Morehead State with a 316 followed by UT Martin in eighth with a 319. Tennessee Tech is ninth with a 322 and Lewis University wraps up the 10-team field with a 336.

Tuesday's final round is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 p.m.
