Most improved runners are one of my favorite things to track. As coaches, we all love a good story about an athlete who puts in the work during the offseason and finds their stride with a big breakthrough.

The best runners in the state will always get plenty of attention, but often the most inspiring stories come from the athletes climbing the "most improved" lists. Some of these improvements can be circumstantial, of course, but more often than not, the athletes making these jumps are the ones who have worked consistently hard over the past 6-12 months. This sport doesn't allow shortcuts - improvement comes from months and years of steady commitment. You can't fake it, and you can't get lucky. That's part of what makes cross country so special, and why we're all drawn to it.

This week we focused on how much they've dropped in the 5K compared to their PRs from last year. To make the list, you must be among the top 1000 times of this past weekend.
