Gamecock Softball Wins Two at USF Tourney

JSU-IU BOX SCORE  |  JSU-CSU BOX SCORE

TAMPA, Fla. – The Jacksonville State softball team picked up wins over Indiana and Cleveland State on Saturday to get the 2010 South Florida Under Armour Showcase underway after Friday was rained out.

To start the day, the Gamecocks (8-8) got a grand slam from Sallie Beth Burch in the first to set up a 6-3 win over Indiana before freshman Hilary Phillips tossed a one hitter to guide JSU to a 2-0 win over Cleveland State in the nightcap. The schedule was pushed back a day after rainy weather postponed the entire first day of the tourney on Friday.

In the first game of the day, JSU got three of its six hits in the first inning to take early control of the game. Senior Chrissy O'Neal got things started with a single to lead off the first, and then a Nikki Prier single and a Meredith Sellers walk set up Burch's blast. The bases-clearing shot down the left field line was her first career round tripper and ran her season RBI total to 5.

A wild pitch scored Tess Echols in the second, and a Sam Rich single in the fifth drove in Prier, who led off the frame with a single to left, gave the Gamecocks a 6-1 lead over the Hoosiers.

Indiana gave JSU pitcher Ashley Eliasson a scare in the top of the seventh, when the Hoosiers got an RBI single from Samantha Berenter and a run-scoring ground out from Breanna Saucedo to cut the Gamecock lead to 6-3 with two outs in the inning. Eliasson beaned Samantha Heyman to bring the tying run to the plate in Amanda Wagner, but she got the Hoosiers' three-hole hitter to line out to second.

Eliasson (4-6) tossed 103 pitches in the complete game win, one that saw the Vallejo, Calif., native surrender three runs, two earned, on seven hits. She also struck out two and walked one in her seven innings of work.

Monica Wright (2-3) suffered the loss for IU after allowing six runs on four hits and five walks in 4.1 innings in the circle. She did strike out 10 batters before giving way to Cassie Loweth, who pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two.

In the nightcap, Phillips got all the support she needed from a run in the second and another in the third before shutting down the Vikings with her first career shutout. The Ider, Ala., native walked five batters and struck out three but held the CSU offense to just one hit, a single by Tess Sito in the first inning.

Phillips (4-2) allowed just four runners to reach second and none past that point, while the JSU offense mustered just enough for her to get the job done. The Gamecocks got a run on an illegal pitch from CSU starter Amanda Mancenko to take an early 1-0 lead in the second, before a Prier single in the third drove in O'Neal to take the deciding two-run advantage.

O'Neal went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for JSU in the win, while five players scattered the team's remaining five hits.

Mancenko was tagged with the loss after surrendering two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work. She struck out nine and didn't issue a walk.

The Gamecocks will wrap up the Under Armour Showcase on Sunday with a pair of games that will begin with a 10:15 a.m. CT meeting with Quinnipiac. They will then take on Pittsburgh at 12:30 p.m. CT.
