BATON ROUGE, La.– The Alabama State University women's and men's teams lead after day one of the 2010 SWAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.

The defending champion Lady Hornets dominated on Saturday in scoring 75 points with first-place finishes in all five championship events. Grambling State is in second with 27 points, and Prairie View A&M third with 24 points.

In men's competition, Alabama State won a pair of running events to claim first place with 37.5 points. Jackson State is in second with 28 points, just ahead of Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff's third-place total of 27 points.

Alabama State's women won the shot put, long jump, high jump, 3,000 meter run and distance medley relay, and finished with multiple top six finishes in the shot put (first and fifth), high jump (first, third, fifth, sixth), and 3,000 meter run (first and second).

A trio of SWAC records were set Saturday. In the men's shot put, UAPB's Terron Armstead won with a Conference-record throw of 16.00 meters (52ft, 6.0 in).

Alabama State took first place in the 3000 meter run in record-setting fashion as Robert Gunn of Alabama State came from behind to win in a Conference-record time of 8:39.51. Gunn beat the old mark of 8:44.33, set just last year by Grambling State's Darwin Price, who finished second this year with a time of 8:30.36. The top four finishers in this year's final bettered the previous record time.

In the high jump, Clifton Swift of Texas Southern was an NCAA provisional qualifier with a SWAC-record 2.14 meter (7 ft. ¼ inch) winning jump.

Field events begin Sunday at 8 a.m. with the finals in all running events beginning at 1 p.m.
