JSU Holds Off Tennessee State, 67-65

Danielle Vaughn and Brittany Wiley recorded double doubles in the same game for the second time this season to lead Jacksonville State (9-18, 6-11 Ohio Valley Conference) to a 67-65 win over Tennessee State (9-16, 6-10 OVC) on Saturday at the Gentry Center.

Vaughn equaled a career-high with 16 points and her 16 rebounds surpassed her previous career mark of 13 set in the first meeting against Tennessee State in Jacksonville. Wiley scored 13 points and collected 10 rebounds to register her fourth double double this season and for her career.

Destiny Lane connected on four of JSU's five three pointers along with a free throw to finish with 13 points. Paris Hollingsworth had three of JSU's five blocked shots and had a game-high five steals.

Jax State finished with a 21-12 edge on points off turnovers and forced 19 TSU turnovers while breaking a two-game losing streak.

The Gamecocks took a 67-63 lead on a pair of free throws by Destiny Lane with 51 seconds left in the contest an then added a Karisma Boykin free throw with 18 seconds left.

A Nikki Rumph layup with 14 seconds left cut the lead to 67-65 before Rumph tied up Lane giving TSU possession on the jump ball with eight seconds to play.

Jasmin Shuler's three-point attempt missed and Wiley collected the rebound to seal the win for JSU.

The Gamecocks had control in the first half going on a 10-2 run with the game tied 6-6. Karisma Boykin's three-pointer put JSU up 16-8 with 11:13 to go in the half.

JSU's lead would stay between eight and 10 points when Lane hit three straight threes, giving JSU a 39-23 on the third three with 1:16 left in the first half.

Tennessee State scored the final six points to trail 39-29 at halftime.

Jacksonville Sate scored 16 points off turnovers, held an 18-16 advantage on points in the paint and got 13 points from the bench in the first half.

The Gamecocks remain on the road for final two games of the 2010 regular season, beginning with a date with nationally ranked Georgetown University on Thursday at 6 p.m. central in Washington, D.C. JSU wraps up its OVC schedule against Tennessee Tech on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Cookeville, Tenn.
