JSU Drops Baseball Two Games on Friday at Red Raider Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – Barret Barnes drove in six runs and Chad Bettis pitched seven strong innings to lead Texas Tech to an 8-3 win over Jacksonville State in the opening day of the 2010 baseball season.

Bettis (1-0) scattered four hits and allowed one run to earn his first win of the season. JSU's Malcolm Thomas (0-1) gave up eight runs in 3 2/3 innings to get stuck with the loss.

Tech (1-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extended the lead to in the third after Barnes hit the first of two home runs to give Tech a 5-0 lead. He added three more RBIs to his total in the fourth inning when he dropped a three-run home run over the left field wall to give Tech an 8-0 advantage. Barnes finished the night with three hits (two home runs) and six RBIs.

Jacksonville State (0-2) tacked on single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings while holding Tech scoreless over the final four frames.

Todd Cunningham, Kyle Bluestein and Cal Lambert each had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks, while Lambert, Cunningham and Steven Leach each drove in a run.

In the opener, Coley Crank hit three home runs and drove in seven runs to power Michigan to a 19-11 Red Raider Classic opening victory over the Gamecocks Friday afternoon.

Tyler Burgoon (1-0) earned the win for the Wolverines after five innings and six earned runs, while Daniel Watts (0-1) picked up the loss following 2.1 innings and 11 runs, nine of which were earned.

Michigan wasted little time getting on the board as the Wolverines scored four runs in the opening frame and seven in the third inning to hold an early 11-0 lead, to chase JSU starter Daniel Watts (0-1) who suffered the loss.

Jacksonville State responded with a six-run bottom of the third, highlighted by a three-run home run by Daniel Adamson, to cut the lead to 11-6.

Michigan added runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 19-6 lead, but the Gamecocks pushed across four in the seventh and a run in the eighth for the final margin.

Jake Sharrock finished with a career-high four hits, while Jay Davis had three hits and Leach and Adamson each had a pair of hits to lead the Gamecocks' 15-hit attack. Adamson led the team with four RBI and Leach added three RBI.

Jacksonville State returns to the field against Michigan at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the second day of the Red Raider Classic.
