Austin Peay Holds Off JSU Women’s Hoops

Danielle Beneby netted a career-high 20 points but Jacksonville State came up short in a 75-71 loss to third place Austin Peay (10-16, 9-6 Ohio Valley Conference) on Thursday at the Dunn Center.

The Gamecocks (8-18, 5-11 OVC) who dropped their second straight game, had two others score in double figures with Brittany Wiley following Beneby with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists. Danielle Vaughn added 11 points with three rebounds, shooting five-of-seven from the floor.

Ashley Herring scored 28 points and had seven rebounds and two assists to lead three Lady Govs in double figures. Nicole Jamen posted a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Jasmine Rayner chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds.

With the game tied 52-52, Austin Peay built 57-47 lead after outscoring JSU 14-4 during the stretch and later led 69-59 on a Herring basket with 4:29 remaining in the game.

The Gamecocks went on a 9-2 spurt to trim the Lady Govs' lead to 71-69 with 23 seconds left in the game before Herring made four-of-four free throws to hold off the Gamecocks.

Jacksonville State finished the night shooting 41.9 percent and was 19-of-23 for a season-high 82.6 percent from the free throw line but went 0-for-11 from beyond the three-point arc. Austin Peay shot 43 percent from the floor and was a perfect 14-for-14 on free throws and three-of-12 on three pointers.

The Lady Govs went on a 14-4 run with the game tied 15-15 to build a 29-19 lead on a Neika Smith layup with 5:17 left in the first half.

Trailing, 32-21, Jacksonville State rallied with a 14-4 run over the final 5:15 of the half to cut the lead to 36-35 at intermission. Cierra Duhart and Zenobia Pitts hit jumpers in the final minute to cap the JSU run.

The Gamecocks made 16-of-32 field goals for 50 percent and did not make a three on three attempts and three-for-five from the free throw line. APSU went 13-for-33 for 45.5 percent and misfired on all five of its three-point attempts but went six-for-six from the charity stripe.

Jacksonville State returns to action against Tennessee State on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Gentry Center in Nashville, Tenn.
