O'Neal, Phillips Receive OVC Weekly Softball Honors

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Senior Chrissy O'Neal and freshman Hilary Phillips earned Ohio Valley Conference weekly honors after their efforts in guiding the Jacksonville State softball team to a pair of wins to open the 2010 season on Sunday.

After the first weekend of play, O'Neal shared the league's Player of the Week honor with Southeast Missouri's Renee Kertz, while Phillips and SEMO's Whitney Dupuis split the OVC Pitcher of the Week accolades. The Gamecocks (2-0) took wins over Indiana and Wright State on Sunday, the only day of play in the snow-shortened Kennesaw State K-Club Classic.

O'Neal, an outfielder from Dallas, Ga., and First Team All-OVC selection in 2009, got her senior campaign off to a fast start by going 4-for-8 over the two games with a home run, a double and four RBI. She homered, doubled and drove in three runs to open the day in a 7-6 win over Indiana. She then singled twice and drove in a run to help JSU upend Wright State in the nightcap.

Phillips, a native of Ider, Ala., made her collegiate debut on Sunday and picked up her first career win in the process. The reigning Miss Softball from the state of Alabama, Phillips went the distance for the 5-4 win over the Raiders, one she had to escape from a bases loaded jam in the seventh to hold onto the victory.

The Gamecocks will open their home schedule on Thursday, when they host future OVC member SIU-Edwardsville at 3 p.m. at University Field. Admission is free for all fans.
