Murphy, Marshall Keep OVC Weekly Honors Coming In

BRENTWOOD, Tenn – Junior Nick Murphy was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Player of the Week for the third time this season, while Trenton Marshall earned his seventh Newcomer of the Week honor, the league office announced on Monday.

The duo received the honors for their efforts in guiding the Gamecocks (11-14, 7-8 OVC) to a 1-1 record last week that saw them clinch a spot in the OVC Tournament for the first time since 2006. Marshall's honor was the seventh Newcomer of the Week award for the Garyville, La., native this season, a new OVC record that passes the six times Southeast Missouri's Derek Winans won the award in the 2001-02 season.

Murphy, a 6-foot-4 forward from Bronx, N.Y., received his most recent honor after averaging 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals over the Gamecocks' games against UT Martin and first-place Murray State. He opened the week with his sixth double-double of the season by scoring 18 points and pulling down 13 boards then capped it with a 24-point, seven-rebound night against the Racers. Murphy connected on 10 of his 12 attempts from the floor against Murray State's league-leading defense, whiel also dishing two assists, swiping two steals and going 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

Marshall, a 6-foot-5 transfer from Jones Junior College in Ellisville, Miss., averaged 18.5 points, five rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game last week. He started the week by scoring 20 points despite being limited to 24 minutes because of foul trouble against the Skyhawks. He also dished four assists and had two steals in that game. On Saturday he struggled from the floor but fought his way to a 17-point night that also saw him grab a team-best eight rebounds, three steals and three assists.

The dual winners marks the fourth time this season that the Gamecocks have earned two different honors in the same week. Their 12 total weekly honors this year are four better than the most they've previously received in a season since joining the OVC in 2003-04.

JSU is in Clarksville, Tenn., for a Monday night game at Austin Peay. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on the JSU Radio Network.
