JSU Softball Takes Two To Open Season at K-Club Classic

KENNESAW, Ga. – After snow postponed the opening of Jacksonville State's 2010 season a day, the Gamecocks finally got their schedule underway on Sunday with wins over Indiana and Wright State at the Kennesaw State K-Club Classic.

The Gamecocks (2-0) used seven unanswered runs to grab a 7-6 win over Indiana in the their first game of the day before holding off Wright State for a 5-4 win in JSU's final game of the snow-shortened weekend.

Sophomore Kaycee Crow homered in each game to double her season total from a year ago to lead a JSU offense that racked up 12 runs and 16 hits on its first day of the season. The Ringold, Ga., native belted a two-run shot in the opener and a solo one in the nightcap, while senior Chrissy O'Neal went 4-for-7 and drove in four runs on the day. Fellow senior Hillary Downs drove in a pair of runs on three hits over the two games.

In the first game of the day, the Gamecocks scattered nine hits among seven hitters, with Downs and O'Neal picking up two apiece in the top of the order. O'Neal, the team's No. 2 hitter, homered and doubled to drive in three runs, while Downs singled twice, drove in a pair and stole base in the win.

The Hoosiers (0-2) took an early 2-0 lead in the home half of the second and held it until the fourth, when a leadoff double from sophomore Meredith Sellers was followed by Crow's second career home run, one that sailed over the left field wall and tied the game at 2-2.

Jax State took the lead for good in the fifth on a three-run home run by O'Neal, a blast to right that also plated Downs and senior Mary Beth Ledbetter. The homer was the 35th of the Dallas, Ga., native's career, moving her into sole possession of third in the school's record books. She trails Rachel Countryman's 36 in second place and Daniela Pappano's school-record 53 in first. A two-run single to right from Downs came in the top of the sixth to cap the rally and give the Gamecocks a late 7-2 advantage.

The Hoosiers went to work on JSU starter Ashley Eliasson, getting two in the sixth on a Kelli Ritchison single. They then put themselves in position in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one before putting runners at second and third with one out. Sammy Berenter hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Kelsey Brannon and cut the lead to one, but the Gamecock defense caught Amanda Wagner, who represented the tying run, off of the bag at second for the final out.

Eliasson (1-0) went the distance for JSU and held on for the win after allowing six earned runs on seven hits. The Vallejo, Calif., native struck out four and walked five in her first action of the season. Cassie Loweth was tagged with the loss for IU after allowing five runs on six hits in four innings of work.

Against Wright State, the Gamecocks and freshman pitcher Hilary Phillips (1-0) took a 5-2 lead into the seventh before watching the Raiders load the bases with no outs. In her collegiate debut, the Ider, Ala., native got out of the jam in the circle by limiting WSU to just two runs to record her first career win. She ended the game allowing four runs, three earned, on 10 hits while walking four and striking out four.

O'Neal was 2-for-3 with an RBI to pace the Gamecocks' offense, while senior Nikki Prier also put together a 2-for-3 game in the finale. Downs picked up two hits and a pair of RBI in four at bats.

Melanie Heyme took the loss for the Raiders after surrendering four runs, three earned, on six hits over 5.1 innings in the circle.

The Gamecocks will open their home schedule on Thursday, when they host future Ohio Valley Conference member SIU-Edwardsville at 3 p.m. in a single game at University Field. Admission is free for all JSU home softball games.
