JSU Women’s Basketball Set For Key Week In OVC

Jacksonville State will host Tennessee-Martin and Murray State for a pair of key Ohio Valley Conference tilts this Thursday and Saturday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Thursday is Red Out night in honor of Cancer Awareness while the Gamecock women will warm up in Pink t-shirts for both of this week's games in support of the WBCA's Breast Cancer Awareness. Tip off for Thursday's game is set for 5:15 p.m. with the first 500 fans receiving a free t-shirt. Saturday's game against Murray State is set for a 2 p.m. start.

This will be the second meeting this season against UT Martin and Murray State. JSU claimed 63-55win over UTM in Martin, Tenn., on Jan. 16 while a big second half propelled Murray State to a 78-49 win in Murray, Ky., on Jan. 14.

JSU owns a 16-7 advantage in the UTM series with the Gamecocks winning the last five meetings. Murray State has won eight straight and has an 11-2 advantage in the series with JSU.

The Gamecocks enter the week 4-9 in OVC play, currently one game out of the eighth and final OVC Tournament spot. JSU is tied with Tennessee Tech for ninth while UT Martin is tied for fifth with Murray State at 5-7.

Jax State earned a hard fought 49-46 overtime win at Eastern Kentucky last Saturday and is 7-16 overall coming into this week.

Brittany Wiley recorded her third double double this season with 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Gamecocks to the win. The Carrollton, Ga., native is scoring 9.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game to lead the Gamecocks.

Karisma Boykin follows with 8.6 points per game and Danielle Vaughn is second with five rebounds per game and a team-high 16 blocked shots.

UT Martin comes in on a roll having won three straight that includes a 77-65 win over Murray State, a 79-70 win over Austin Peay and a 60-51 win triumph over Tennessee State.

The Skyhawks are lead by Alecia Weatherly, who is averaging 12.9 points per game and is second with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Darnisha Lyles posts a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game and Cali Cupples is second with 9.8 points per game.

Murray State opens this week's schedule at Tennessee Tech on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Racers are 10-13 overall following a 76-72 home loss to Austin Peay last Saturday.

The Racers have three players averaging in double figures and are led by Rachael Isom's 12.9 points per game. Kayla Vance averages 11.2 and Mallory Luckett chips in 10.1 points per contest. Luckett is tops on the boards with seven rebounds a game and Kristen Kluempers has blocked 32 shots.
